Wonderful World of Weaving

This month our focus in art in the lower school was the wonderful world of weaving. There is just something magical about weaving. Seriously. There were times you could hear a pin drop the students were so mesmerized by the process.

This first image is from Kindergarten artists. We did our weaving on styrofoam looms. The children can remove the ribbons and practice at home. They finished them off with a bead hanger top using more fine motor skills.

In first we created mixed media sun faces. The first class we worked together on weaving the sun rays sitting on the classroom carpet. Students could assist each other a bit on this project getting started.

As the second part of this project students used a variety of materials to create a sun face.

My 3rd graders loved working on these flower looms! The center was a little tricky, but once they got it they did not want to stop!

In 2nd grade we actually focused on sewwing instead of weaving. This is a long project. The first class we only learned a simple running stich and made the border after creating our designs on a burlap frame. The children were so sad when class was over and could not wait to work on them the next week. During the second week we did review and worked on the main design. Some students learned a few other stiches. These were kept in the classroom for students to occasionally work on over the next few weeks if they finished other work early.
